About The Blog

Welcome to The Neurodivergent Well

My name is Emily, and this blog is about finding more joy and well-being as neurodivergent humans.

I was inspired to start The Neurodivergent Well because I noticed that both the scientific literature and the personal accounts of neurodivergent people suggest that mainstream methods for enhancing wellness can sometimes be counterproductive for neurodivergent brains. Often, what works for most, doesn’t work for us - our brains need something different.

I created The Neurodivergent Well as a space where we could explore what works for our own unique minds.

Here’s a bit of what you can expect from my writing…

(TLDR at end for accessibility)

Research-Based Investigations

As a science journalist, nothing makes me happier than diving into scientific research and sharing what I’ve found. I hope to offer insights here grounded in rigorous research and a nuanced understanding of science - both in what it can teach us, and where it can be limited by methodological issues or influenced by researchers’ bias. I will delve into various topics related to neurodivergence, always with peer reviewed studies linked to support scientific claims. From examining the latest studies, to reevaluating established theories through a neurodivergent lens, I hope this blog will be a haven for those who seek evidence-based explanations on the current scientific literature.

Merging Science with Experience

Science is an incredibly useful tool, but it has yet to provide us with all the answers. That’s why my writing has always emphasized merging what we know from science, with what we can learn from people’s personal experiences. I draw from the rich, lived experiences of neurodivergent individuals themselves, which can often add layers of insight to the picture presented by the science. By intertwining these perspectives, I aim to offer a holistic view of what wellness can look like for us. Still, I always aim to clearly indicate what sources I am using so that the reader knows what is scientifically grounded and what comes from individual experiences.

What Works for My Neurodivergent Brain

In my writing, I also share about what has personally helped me find more balance and joy in my life. There are practices and resources I’ve discovered through my investigation of wellness science that have made a significant impact on my own well-being. Many of these are rooted in mindfulness, self-compassion, art, and pagan spirituality - but have elements that are tied to enhanced well-being in the scientific literature. I've found that merging science with the sacred aspects of the human experience brings together parts of myself that are both deeply meaningful and helpful to living a full life.

Since processing my experiences with art really helps my brain integrate, you may also see my artwork included in many of my posts.

We are all different, and what works for me, may not always work for you. Still, much of what has helped me the most has been collected from others with similar neurotypes sharing their own successes and failures. It's my hope that by sharing these personal insights and practices, you might find new avenues to explore in your own quest for wellness.

I encourage you to take these insights with curiosity and openness, taking what helps and leaving the rest. And please keep in mind that nothing in my blog is medical or psychological advice.
